What are we solving for
We want to remove the motherhood penalty.
According to 2022 Treasury research, mothers experience a significant decline in earnings, known as the "motherhood penalty", with an average decrease of 55% during the initial five years of parenthood. Women are retiring with on average half the superannuation as men. Older single women are the fastest growing group of people falling into homelessness in Australia.
We want to close the gender pay gap.
Motherhood penalty has become a significant factor in explaining the overall gender earnings gap. This is due to a combination of lower participation rates and reduced working hours.
We want to boost women’s labour force participation after having children.
Women who had access to flexible work options before becoming mothers are more likely to remain employed. While 90% of women identifying access to flexibility as important, only 16% strongly agree that they have access to the flexibility they need. Only 40% said they can access affordable training to equip them for better jobs. We need to do better.
